about the work of Nerida Boessler.

Biography

"Sometimes at the bottom of holes when the water is gone, I can see rounded stones which have been perfectly placed in spiral patterns. A sculptor couldn't match the 'rightness' of what in time - wind, water, ice, and rock aggregate achieves on its own."

My husband Norman and I moved here to Armidale in mid 2003 with our children Jakob, Lily and Finn. I began my studies in Visual Arts in Feb 2005 and loved it from the start. I felt that I had been waiting for this season to begin for years. When we lived in Darwin, I worked as an Illustrator. During that time, by necessity I worked only in pencil, pen, ink and watercolour. Learning how to work in oil paints has been genuinely exciting for me. I make my own primers, wax medium and damar varnish and prepare boards and canvases from scratch. My biggest challenge has been trying to paint with self expression, which sounds far simpler than it actually is. The pieces I am most pleased with are ones where I have stretched myself to experiment and create something outside of my previous experience. Artists that I am inspired by include Dorothy Napangardi, Emily Kangwarre, Bill Henson, Lucien Freud, James Whistler and John Singer Sargent.
