about the work of Jeanette Berman.

Biography

Jeanette Berman, a local, has exhibited in the New England and in Canberra. She was the winner of the Painting and Coloured Pastel section of the 2004 Farmgate Exhibition at Wool Expo.

In this exhibition she has teamed some traditional watercolour landscapes with ink and watercolour calligraphy that uses letterforms from China and Sri Lanka as well as the Roman alphabet. She has been creating art with lettering since she was young. "I remember using different styles in my workbooks at school because I was fascinated by the variety of lettering I could create on different days and with different pens. A handwriting expert might have questioned the stability of my mental state but it was just an exploration of lettering as an amazing dynamic form of art."

Jeanette explores lettering in the conventional calligraphic ways, using standard letter proportions and traditional ink and parchment. She places lettering in watercolour landscapes, using text to create texture, and embedding explicit meaning. She also uses watercolour techniques to develop designs using calligraphic forms.
