about the work of Nicci Jones.

Biography

In 2007-08 I completed an Advanced Diploma of Ceramics through Gymea TAFE, Sydney after being an independant potter for 14 years working in the New England area. For this course I created a major body of work which was exhibited in the Armidale Art Gallery, Gunnedah Creative Art Gallery, Playhouse Hotel Gallery, Barraba and Muse Gallery, Ultimo, Sydney. The Key Events Series was also completed in 2008 and spans the period from 1960 to the current day. I created 9 individual sculptures to represent each of the chosen key events. None are larger than 30cm tall and all are reduction gas fired with shino glaze. They are hand built from Keane's Hand Building Clay. The decision to give each figure the same surface treatment was made to unify them but also to invoke the earthiness of the sculptures implying human connection to nature sometimes forgotten within our Western society. All are purposely simplified using the symbolism identified with each event to speak for itself and allow the audience to respond using their own memories of the event. To contrast this, I have made most of the sculptures feminine figures to reflect my concern with the representation of key historical events being automatically associated with men.
