about the work of Helen Clark.

Biography

HELEN CLARK

A Dorrigo artist, I have been drawing in soft pastel for five years, have achieved success in regional art
competitions and have work displayed in galleries in Bellingen and Armidale. In my impressionist landscapes I like to use intense colour and a bold approach.

My work reflects a deep involvement with and love for the natural environment. I sometimes focus on
the close detail, concentrating on the architectural shapes of plant life or rocks, while in others I try to
capture the interplay of light and shade within the forest or across broader landscapes. I have also experimented with a combination of collage and pastel.

A self-taught pastelist, I have increased my skills through completion of four workshops, under the tuition of pastelists Tim Miller, Colina Grant, Larry Blovitts and Max Wilks. I aim to continue to grow as an
artist, broadening my scope of both subject matter and my ability to capture what I see.

My background includes graphic design and illustration, predominantly detailed black and white drawings of plants and animals, and currently I work as a freelance graphic designer, producing interpretation
signs and displays, maps and publications in the area of tourism, natural and cultural heritage conservation and land management.
